Looe Fish Market was rebuilt in 1987 and re-opened in September that year by the local MP, Robert Hicks.

Since then many improvements have been made , from the shutters protecting the market, to the scales, fridges and most recently the electronic auction.

The great majority of boats land their fish through the auction, and fish is also overlanded from Polperro, Mevagissey and at certain times of the year, Brixham.

The fish is renowned for its high quality and it is this quality which commands the best prices for the boats.

The new electronic auction system offers the necessary traceability standards by printing a bar code on each lot which identifies the date, the boat, the area the fish was caught the species weight and grade. In theory if this bar code is carried on through the chain a consumer can identify exactly who caught the fish, when and where.

With the introduction of this website, the port of Looe is again at the forefront of using technology to connect the Boats with the Buyers to their mutual advantage.
